Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) and
Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD)

Investment in the Expansion of Broadband Infrastructure

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way millions of Americans work, attend school and socialize. The availability of reliable high-speed connections to people’s homes and places of business has been critical to this shift.

In metropolitan areas many already enjoyed the benefits of a truly high-speed broadband connection. Others, because neighborhood networks were already in place, were able to upgrade with a simple request to a local service provider.

But for millions of Americans that live in rural, unserved or underserved areas, such connections remain elusive. The Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) and the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) fund are the federal government’s response to this need.

Fiber Will Lead the Way Forward

As experienced network designers and engineers know, there is no “one size fits all” technology. It is expected that copper, wireless and even satellite will find application in specific use cases however, the technology of choice will certainly be fiber optics.

Benefits of Fiber Networks:

  • Longer reach and wider bandwidth than copper
  • Simple growth for future subscribers and applications
  • Affordable components
  • Resistance to interference
